Be Careful with the Name You Accept
**Be Careful with the Name You Accept**
In our lives, the names we accept and the labels we embrace can profoundly influence our identity, self-perception, and destiny. The Bible provides numerous instances where names held significant meanings and implications. It’s crucial to be mindful of the names and identities we accept, as they can shape our lives in powerful ways.
**Biblical References to the Importance of Names**
1. **Genesis 32:28:** God changed Jacob’s name to Israel, saying, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” This name change signified a new identity and destiny for Jacob.
2. **1 Chronicles 4:9-10:** Jabez was named “pain” by his mother, but he prayed to God to bless him and enlarge his territory, and God granted his request. Jabez did not let his name define his destiny.
3. **Isaiah 62:2:** “The nations will see your righteousness, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow.” This verse emphasizes that God can give us new names and identities that reflect His purpose for us.
4. **Revelation 2:17:** “To the one who is victorious, I will give… a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.” This promise shows the transformative power of a name given by God.
**The Power of Names**
Names are not just labels; they carry meanings and can shape our destinies. In the Bible, God often changed names to reflect new purposes and destinies. As believers, we should be cautious about the names and labels we accept from others or even from ourselves. Instead, we should embrace the identity and purpose that God has for us.
**Call to Action:**
Take a moment to reflect on the names and labels you have accepted in your life. Are they aligned with God’s purpose for you? Reject any negative names or labels and embrace the identity that God has given you. Share your journey of discovering your true identity in Christ and encourage others to do the same.
**Prayer Point:**
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the identity and purpose You have given us. Help us to reject any negative names or labels that do not align with Your will. Grant us the strength to embrace the new name and destiny You have for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
